Michela Fabeni Art Gallery | Underwater: Raw Bas-Relief and Material Revelation | Smussato Technique

Underwater is born as a deep immersion, a slow passage into a space that is not only water, but awareness. It represents a radical return: matter itself.

In this revelation, Underwater appears as a raw smoothed bas-relief, stripped, essential.

A single vital sign emerges: a dried green starfish placed on the head. It is not decoration, but a necessary presence.

The starfish becomes a symbol of regeneration and primordial memory. The green does not interrupt the silence of white; it crosses it like an ancient breath. It is the only chromatic pulse, a visual threshold that invites deeper listening.

The personal Smussato technique remains visible and declared. The surface preserves every trace of the gesture, every irregularity, every passage of the hand. Nothing is concealed. Matter stays alive, porous, shaped by time and intention.

In this essential form, Underwater does not ask to be interpreted, but to be felt.

It is emergence after immersion. It is what remains when the superfluous falls away. A figure carrying a fragment of the sea on its head, like a silent guide, like an intimate revelation.

Matter reveals its deepest truth. Beneath the surface, what is essential continues to breathe. www.michelafabeniart.com
