Michela Fabeni Art Gallery | Without Mercy | Bas-Relief on Canvas Between Primordial Power and Wild Identity

Without Mercy is a bas-relief on canvas (65 x 90 cm) through which I explore the primordial bond between human and animal essence. The female figure, marked by leonine features, emerges as an embodiment of ancestral, instinctive, and conscious strength.

I shaped the surface using a palette knife, combining organic materials and gold leaf to create a living, vibrant texture that captures and reflects light in constantly shifting ways. The iridescent metallic green enhances the visual tension of the work, emphasizing its three-dimensional presence and inviting both the gaze and the sense of touch.

The figure radiates power, grace, and ferocity. She is a lioness, a symbol of resilience, authority, and self-determination. There is no gratuitous aggression, but a grounded presence that does not ask for permission. The title Senza Pietà does not refer to cruelty, but to an unstoppable determination: the ability to remain faithful to one’s own nature, even in adversity.

My visual language moves between tradition and contemporaneity. The use of gold leaf recalls the spiritual and sacred dimension of Byzantine art, while the material gesture resonates with contemporary avant-garde research. The woman-animal theme engages with a current reflection on identity and on the relationship between nature, instinct, and consciousness.

Without Mercy does not seek approval. It is an affirmation. A presence. A suspended moment where strength becomes form, and form becomes truth.

Strength does not ask for permission. Instinct is an ancient memory that never lies. To remain faithful to one’s nature is a sacred act.
